Discover Sparks’ lesser-known past and exciting future.

When you shine a spotlight on the city of Sparks, you reveal some pretty cool, interesting and heartwarming things. And right about now, we can all use a little more of that.

Sparks’ residents unite during WWII

In the past, residents of Sparks have discovered different ways to contribute towards the greater good. During World War II, Sparks’ residents drew inspiration from the members of the Union Pacific Railroad and raised $600,000, purchasing a B-25J bomber known as The Spirit of Sparks. The Spirit of Sparks would go on to assist on more than 150 special missions for the United States Air Force before becoming decommissioned. You can learn more about the good deeds of the people of Sparks by visiting the exhibits at the Sparks Museum and Cultural Center.

Locally made products deliver the goods here at home

With the supply chain disruptions brought about by the pandemic and uncertainty over the impact of sanctions against Russia, it’s been a relief to be able to count on locally produced products. The Flag Store in Sparks offers an expansive collection of products made in Nevada, including custom flags, signs, banners, food items, and more.

Long time Sparks cartoonist mentors tomorrow’s talent

Brian Crane’s Pickles comics have run in more than 900 newspapers worldwide. In 2013, the Sparks native was awarded the Rueben Award from the National Cartoonist Society. He’s hobnobbed with other famous cartoonists, including Charles Schulz (Peanuts) and Bill Waterston (Calvin & Hobbes), but today he’s shifted his focus to the future names of the industry. Crane has been mentoring local art students here in Sparks, teaching them to use art and comics as an escape and as a potential career path. Given the printed comic strip world is an endangered industry, helping the next round of stars is an expression of love for the craft and its future.
